The Association of SuDS Authorities (ASA) has been officially launched as a membership organisation which aims to promote and develop the use of sustainable drainage within all new developments.

The Association will also work to share and promote good practice to enhance the effectiveness of sustainable drainage, to own and develop the guidance for the Non-Statutory Technical Standards for Sustainable Drainage Systems and to engage with Government in developing policy and regulation for surface water management.

The development of ASA grew out of discussions with Lead Local Flood Authorities (LLFA) and District Councils across the country which saw support for the creation of a formal association supporting the delivery of sustainable drainage.

It is hoped that LLFA’s, Local Authorities and Risk Management Authorities across the country will join from County, Unitary and District Councils.

ASA has been incorporated as a Community Interest Company and has a service level agreement with the Association of Drainage Authorities to undertake its administrative functions.

ASA has officially responded on behalf of its members to the Environment Agency’s Draft Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk management Strategy highlighting the importance of SuDS.

ASA championed SuDS throughout the document but felt it could be stronger in terms of terminology and would welcome further consultation and involvement in setting standards in relation to surface water drainage.

The Association said it will continue to lobby government in relation to SuDS and their incorporation within policy and future developments, whilst highlighting the need to address resourcing, budgets and skill shortages in the area.
