Southern Water has awarded an AMP8 Chemicals Framework contract worth an estimated £104 million.
The contract covers the supply and management of chemicals for the treatment of waste water and provision
of clean water. When the water company went out to tender with the contract it emphasised that the continuity of supply is essential, pointing out that disruption to the supply of chemicals could have an impact on its operations and/ or brand perception.
Companies tendering for the work were required to have the resources, management, capacity, sourcing power and processing capability inplace to meet Southern Water expectations, spikes in demand and fluctuating volumes. The use of telemetry, VIM (vendor inventory management) or automated stock control and re-ordering systems was also specified as essential.
The water company has awarded the framework to a pool of Service Providers.to ensure that the utility have a resilient supply chain to minimise the impact of any supply disruptions.
Scope of the contract covers a wide range of chemicals, including:
- Basic inorganic chemicals,
- Sulphuric acid
- Phosphoric acid
- Hydroxides as basic inorganic chemicals
- Sodium hydroxide
- Caustic soda
- Carbon
- Ferric chloride
- Ferric sulphate
- Sodium sulphate
- Methanol
- Water-treatment chemicals
The procurement is covered by the Government Procurement Agreement.
Seven companies were in the bidding for the work – the following companies have all been awarded a place on the framework.
- Brenntag UK Ltd
- Industrial Chemicals Limited
- Kemira OYJ
- Tennants Distribution
- Tarmac Cement and Lime
Award of business under the framework will be determined by suppliers placing the most competitive bid for supply of each chemical.
