The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has published an updated National Policy Statement for water resources infrastructure – an update of the NPS released in 2023.
New analysis has revealed the largest budget for the Environment Agency’s water regulation in history – the massive cash injection comes through charges on water companies (not from taxpayers) via the Water (Special Measures) Act which introduces new levies to pay for water company enforcement activities.
The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee will hear evidence in person on Wednesday from Philip Duffy, Environment Agency Chief Executive and Emma Hardy, Minister for Water and Flooding as part of its inquiry into flood resilience in England.
Water regulator Ofwat says the adoption and roll out of innovation and move from trials and pilots to mainstream activity remains a challenge in the sector.
Following a report commissioned by Ofwat from Baringa Partners on how Ofwat's regulation impacts on economic growth which was published in April 2025, Ofwat has commissioned a further piece of consultancy work on the economic growth agenda from consultancy firm KPMG LLP worth an estimated £98,580 (inc VAT).
