Regulation and Legislation
Ofwat has concluded its investigation into Northumbrian Water securing an enforcement package of £15.7 million to be paid by the wastewater company and their shareholders, not customers.
Ofwat has published findings from research into a Southern Water supply interruption that took place in Southampton and Marchwood in December 2024 - and is calling on water companies to ensure they can provide alternative water quickly to vulnerable customers.
Ofwat has launched a new consultation on its proposal to establish charging rules for English water companies to comply with in setting their bulk charges in supplying water to or discharging wastewater from new appointments and variations.
Ofwat has published new guidance on what factors it will take into account in determining whether an infrastructure project should be specified for delivery under the Water Industry (Specified Infrastructure Projects) (English Undertakers) Regulations 2013.

The government has announced that Environment Secretary Steve Reed has “seized control” of the planning process to build two major reservoirs for the first time since the 1990s, describing the move as a “significant intervention to speed up delivery of much-needed reservoirs.”
